Each month we discuss a significant cookbook and prepare a group meal adapted from its recipes. Here’s what’s on the Cookbook Club menu this month:

The West Coast Cook Book by Helen Evans Brown, 1952
With its push for using local, fresh ingredients, Helen Evan Brown’s West Coast Cook Book laid the foundation to what became known as California cuisine. Brown gave historical context and social significance to her recipes, transforming cookbook writing into a scholarly endeavor. Her 500-volume collection of California cookbooks were acquired by the Huntington Library in 1983. ($115)
