Mrs. Beeton’s Book of Household Management (online)

Join Maite Gomez-Rejón, who shares the history of, and then cooks from, “Mrs. Beeton’s Cookery Book” (first published in 1861 as “Mrs. Beeton’s Book of Household Management”).

Edited by journalist and writer Isabella Beeton, the book contains more than 900 recipes, most of which are beautifully illustrated with colorful engravings. It was influential in shaping middle-class identity during the Victorian era and was the first book to present recipes in the format we commonly see today.

Following a brief discussion, the instructor will demonstrate how to make:

  • Claret Cup Cocktails

  • Salmon with Caper Sauce

  • Traditional English Trifle

This event will be held online via Zoom as part of The Huntington’s virtual series “Taste of Art: Women in the Collections”. The Zoom link will be included in the payment confirmation email, and the recipes demonstrated will be sent in an additional email shortly before the class begins.

A recording of the class will be available to attendees until March 30, 2023.
