Women in the Collection: What Mrs. Fisher Knows About Old Southern Cooking

This month, in The Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Garden’s "Taste of Art" virtual series, Women in the Collections, Gomez-Rejón focuses on the 1881 cookbook What Mrs. Fisher Knows About Old Southern Cooking by Abby Fisher.

Born enslaved in 1832, Abby Fisher learned to cook in South Carolina plantation kitchens. After the Civil War, she moved to Alabama before relocating to San Francisco where she became a sought-after cook, caterer and business owner. Friends and patrons insisted Fisher - who was illiterate - write a cookbook. She dictated stories and recipes to her supporters and became one of the country’s first African American cookbooks authors.

The class begins with the history behind the cookbook with a cooking demonstration inspired by its pages.
