The Automat, America’s first major fast food restaurant, was a feature in New York City and Philadelphia in the early 20th century. Contrary to modern fast food chains, automats had a strict fresh-food policy. Simple food and drink was served by vending machines, not people! An American icon, automats were popular among actors, playwrights and artists.
Together we’ll explore the history of the Automat, discover the art and artists it influenced, and prepare a simple menu inspired by its nearly 400 menu items.
We will begin the class making White Russians to honor Horn & Hardart’s 5 cent coffee. Cigars and cigarettes optional.
